It is a practice that holds back American employers and employees economically and American ideals and values more broadly. But we cannot afford to scale them by offering them unpaid. ![]() At roughly 1/3 of college graduates hitting this mark, we have a long way to go toward scaling internship opportunities. In an ideal world, every single student would have an internship at some point in their educational journey. Internships matter a great deal to students’ future success – arguably as much as their academic credentials. In doing so, they will help contribute meaningfully to building a more robust diverse talent pipeline for themselves and help end yet another inequitable practice that has unfortunately flourished in America. Most importantly, though, employers of all shapes and sizes can commit – and commit publicly - to offering only paid internships.Less than 1/3 of universities currently offer such support to students. Short of legislative action or until there is such action, universities can prioritize fundraising for internship scholarship funds to support students in low or unpaid internships.This kind of legislation has bubbled up in the past and today’s climate for action on socioeconomic and racial injustice suggests there could be widespread support for such moves.
